General Tips for Booking in Rome
If Nobody Answers
Try again in an hour or two. Many trattorias are one-person operations during prep hours. If you've tried three times with no answer, it's perfectly acceptable to walk in at the start of service (around 7:30 PM) and ask for a table in person.
Use Your Hotel Concierge
If phone calls feel too daunting, your hotel front desk will almost always make the call for you. Just give them the restaurant name, date, time, and party size. This is what they're there for.
Try TheFork (La Forchetta)
The app TheFork (owned by Tripadvisor) is the closest thing Italy has to OpenTable. A decent number of Roman restaurants are listed there, and you can book without speaking a word of Italian. It even offers occasional discounts. Worth checking before you call.
Timing Your Dinner
Romans eat late. Dinner service starts at 7:30 PM, but most locals sit down between 8:30 and 9:30 PM. Booking at 7:30 is fine (you'll have the place to yourself at first), but 8:00-8:30 is the sweet spot between "not too empty" and "still available."
